I have been teaching Karate since I was a green belt in 1989 at the Northwest Neighborhood Center as an assistant, as I was always eager to learn, compete and participate in every Shotokan seminar that came to Arizona. In 2008, I was second in command at the Dunbar School. Karate is an integral part of my life. I believe in training for health, and balance of body and mind. I retain a 2nd Dan. Amos Sotelo

The youngest boy of his parent’s five children Amos Sotelo grew up fighting. He began wrestling at the age of four continuing through his childhood and even winning the state championship in New Mexico and Arizona. By the age of ten his father decided boxing would be the next thing for him and two years later he began taking amateur fights. In amateur boxing he won the state championship three times and made it to the US nationals representing Arizona. When he was twenty-two he moved to Las Vegas to pursue a professional carrier and began training under Eugene “Honey Bear” Bryant at Johnny Tocco’s Boxing Gym. “I knew about boxing, but Eugene is the one who really taught me how to box” Amos remembers.

Upon moving back to Tucson, Amos returned to training with his amateur boxing coach at a local gym where mixed martial arts fighters such as Drew Fickett also trained. In 2003 after a session of sparring Drew asked Amos to help him out with his boxing, a fair trade for lessons in jiu jitsu. Eager to test his training Amos started fighting professional MMA within a year. Amos has fought fights in Rage in the Cage, Desert Heat, XFC, and the IFL. At the same time he also began teaching boxing at a local gym finding a passion for teaching others what he is most passionate about.

Since then he has continuously taught boxing, MMA, and even started children’s and adults grappling programs in boxing gyms. In 2009 Amos received a Crossfit kettle bell certificate from Jeff Martone, opening his eyes to a new method of training and sparking his interest in the Crossfit program. In January 2011 Amos completed the cross fit methodology and foundational movement requirements and obtained a Crossfit Level 1 trainer certificate . After training using the Crossfit program he wishes he had these techniques when he was fighting. The results in him and those he has taught have cemented his belief that Crossfit is the best strength and conditioning program for anyone. He believes everyone, all ages and fitness levels, is an athlete; teaching them to express it and seeing the results is and remains Amos’s true passion.
